Child Care Aware of Virginia is committed to preventing heatstroke and other car-related tragedies involving children. In partnership with Kids and Cars and BabyIn BabyOut, we urge all parents, caregivers, child care providers, and community members to take action to ensure no child is left unattended in a vehicle or car seat.
The dangers are real:
- Heatstroke: Vehicular heatstroke is one of the leading causes of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths for children under 15.
- SIDS and Suffocation: Car seats are for travel only. Never leave an infant unattended in a car seat.
- Accidents and Improper Car Seat Installation: Car accidents are a major cause of child fatalities in the United States and unfortunately, 95% of car seats in the U.S. are installed incorrectly (Journal of Pediatrics).
Child Care Aware of Virginia encourages the public to never leave a child in a vehicle unattended, always look in the back seat before exiting your car, always lock your car, and always keep your keys out of children’s reach.
